Description

This project is about to create a new organic fruit orchard of 3600 sqm. This is to replace an intensively used piece of farm land and to create a shelter for rare species who find a good habitat between the fruit trees. Therefore the land in the surrounding of the trees shall be seeded with 41 local herbs and flowers to attract the insects and birds.

There is a strong need to create an impact: I bought a piece of land of about 3.600 sqm and instead of growing corn I change it to an extensively used land with apple and pear trees.

The trees are of old and rare kinds and I graved them myself. The plants have been growing for nearly two years in our yard and now it is time to put them in place where they can start to grow properly. The land shall be also seeded with 41 typical local sorts of flowers and herbs.

This is why I start to collect money to buy the seeds and to pay a farmer to seed them into the soil by using specific machines. Further, the trees have to be protected against venison and/or rabbits in the first years and thus I strive to buy additional protection measures.

I will plant more than 60 trees of all different kind of old sorts of apple and pear species.

The grafted trees in front of our house.

What is the funded money used for?

400 € Rent of Machinery to mount the trees
400 € Long lasting labels allow to remember the sorts of fruit trees
1.000 € Protection measures against beasts and to proect from wind
2.500 € Seeds for the herbs and flowers including the rent of machinery

– The local seed costs for the entire field including seeding preparation and following treatments cost about 2500 EUR
– The protection against animals including the mounting materiel for the trees cost another EUR 1000 for all trees.
– Providing sustainable plates to describe the species costs additionally EUR 400
– to rent out Machinery for the planting process of the trees costs approximately EUR 400
– all plants, grafting and buying the various kinds of fruit sorts and rootstocks – I have done and covered myself
– the cost for the fields are born by me

Why is the project an EcoCrowd project?

My aim is to create local shelter for bio diversity and give animals a shelter in a heavily used landscape. Used by agriculture but also by people.

Local variety of species is very important on a cultural but also on an ecological basis. Previous generations made a big effort to create the species and they successfully grew for centuries. So we should preserve them.

Moreover, I reacted allergic to apples and pears from supermarket, but I can enjoy old species of fruits without being harmed. More people should have this benefit.

Tell us something about yourself.

I’ve been keeping bees for some years, thus wanted to create an additional food source for them and started to get deeper into the topic of local fruit trees and graving them.

Since three years I have started to grave apples and pears and have derived at 48 species of apples and 14 species of pears. In most cases I have graved more then 1 per specie.

After a severe sickness more than a year ago, I quit my office job and started to dig into my dream of creating a mixed orchard.

    Euer Michael
