Summary

35 harvest sharers already eat tasty organic vegetables from the field around the corner – now we want to deliver them by bicycle trailer in a resource-conserving way. We also need a milling machine – both save resources, power and money.

Description

Sowing organic vegetables in the Thuringian state capital, harvesting them and eating them with pleasure – that was the first idea of a community-supported agriculture in Erfurt. This idea has been around for a while and has circled in many different minds. At the beginning of this year the time had come – we realised this idea and founded Solawi (CSA) Erfurt e.V., distributed 35 harvest shares and the gardeners Maria, Andrea and Juliane prepared the beds in Büßleben, a suburb of Erfurt. In addition, we have founded a CSA core team and a variety of working groups in order to prepare the ground for cultural plants in addition to the jointly shared vegetables.

Since May 2019 the time has come: the first harvest season has started! In the meantime we have had many great experiences with harvesting, transport, storage and distribution organised in solidarity and now we would like to grow a little and in a green way.

Our gardeners work on 2000 m² mainly by hand to protect the soil. In the past, very hot and dry months, the cultivation of the loamy soil in the beds has been very time-consuming and exhausting. Therefore we would like to purchase a single-axle cutter with a milling attachment to make the work of our gardeners easier (the single-axle cutter is already on loan in our shed). This supports the daily work and helps to get time and strength for other tasks.

Right now CSA volunteers travel twice a week from our gardeners in Büßleben to the city centre of Erfurt to our distribution station “Clärchen” – that’s about 20 km per trip. At the moment everyone does this on a voluntary basis by car. However, many of us prefer to cycle and protect our environment. For several months now we have been dreaming of organising the transport with a bicycle trailer à la “Carla Cargo”. Since the route is hilly and with the large quantities of vegetables difficult to manage with pure muscle power, we would also like to make our transport dream take shape in such a way that with your help we can acquire a bicycle trailer with e-drive – an E-Carla Cargo!

What is the funded money used for?

8.640 € E-driven bicycle trailer
1.460 € Single-axe cutter with milling attachment

If, with your support, we can raise 1,460 €, then we will buy the single-axe cutter with an attachment for milling. When we reach 8.640 €, we also buy an E-Carla (48V) with weather protection, with which all volunteers can drive the vegetables – regardless of weather or condition. We will also make the E-Carla available to other groups in Erfurt via https://www.ella-lastenrad.de/ who are committed to sustainable alternatives.

If we do not reach the target amount, we would try to raise the missing amount with other sustainable foundations / organisations etc. that support initiatives like ours. In any case, the money flows into the milling machine and the bicycle trailer.

Why is the project an EcoCrowd project?

The CSA principle itself is rich in sustainable approaches: Our gardeners Maria, Andrea and Juliane produce organically grown vegetables, seasonal, fresh, delicious and with a short distance to the consumers, without intermediaries, but with face and heart. The organic cultivation method protects soil, water, fauna and flora. The short line to the harvest sharers brings knowledge and understanding for food production to consumers and helps on the other hand to create planning security for gardeners. The deliberately open communication in the association, the core team and the working groups serves a good networking among each other, promotes new exciting ideas and their realisation and creates a sense of togetherness.

The milling machine should facilitate the daily work on the field and thus help to conserve the resources of our gardeners.

And our idea of the sustainable transport of our sustainably cultivated vegetables is a further and logical step towards the protection of resources for the benefit of mankind and nature. We also want to make our e-driven bicycle trailer available to other groups in Erfurt. Because there are already three load bikes in Erfurt which can be rented at https://www.ella-lastenrad.de/ – but our bicycle trailer is the first with electric drive and therefore also suitable for loads up to 150kg per load.

Tell us something about yourself.

We are Jule (Juliane), Maria and Nadine from Solawi Erfurt e.V. and we want to make the transport of our delicious vegetables as sustainable as possible for all 35 harvest sharers. We are all active in the core team and various working groups.

We all agree that we love cycling in addition to the fresh air and that we would also like to show other people that car-free life is easy in Erfurt!
