Small is beautiful – a fountain for Calabria

Rossella lives in an almost deserted mountain village in Pentedattilo, Calabria.

She lives there with Maka, a young refugee from Mali. Together they work the land in the traditional way, harvesting organic vegetables, just as the goat cheese and pork are organic. Rossella offers accommodation in two beautiful, simple accommodations. Her Cucina Contadina (farmer’s kitchen) offers meals that can be enjoyed on the terrace with a view of Mount Etna and the sea. Except for the grain, everything is from her own production, antipasti, vegetables, goat cheese, meat, and she bakes the bread herself in a stone oven. Olive, almond and fig trees grow on their land and in the surrounding area. The two of them cope with the amount of work with the help of work aways, mostly young people from all over the world who work for board and lodging. Rossella teaches them about traditional agriculture, traditional Italian farmhouse cuisine and a life in harmony with nature. 

Like everywhere else, life here also depends on water. In recent years it has rained less and less frequently. Especially in the summer months it often happens that the water is turned off by the municipality. To keep agriculture alive here, only a well can help. 

This project is very important to us because my wife and I have known and appreciated Rossella for over 25 years. With her natural, friendly, cheerful and authentic manner, Rossella brings people of all walks of life together.

I bought a small house and land in the immediate vicinity of the village to support the project, as well as I supported Rossella with some money. If water can now be found with the help of crowdfunding and a well can be dug, the project will be significantly strengthened since it would no longer depend on the unreliable public water supply. 

The first, fundamental goal of this project is to find water and drill a well. This part of Calabria is very dry and dry. Especially in summer there are always long bottlenecks with the public water supply.

Even if the target amount is not reached, the money raised will be fully invested in the project.

If the target amount is exceeded, all of the money will flow into the project.

Small is beautiful is an EcoCrowd project because it because it promotes organic agriculture and nutrition, nature conservation, species protection as well as environmental education and environmental awareness in a sustainable way.

My name is Webster Steinhardt. I am 54 years old and live with my wife on the outskirts of Hamburg. I work as a furniture packer and truck driver. Kerstin works in a small health food store and teaches chair yoga in senior residences. 

The time we live in needs small, sustainable projects that show how important it is to live in harmony with nature.
